Description:
Succulent shrub or small tree, usually single-stemmed. Branchlets constricted into oblong segments up to 40 cm long, 3-4-angled with thin, distinctly undulating wings (See centre photo); spine shields more or less continuous, forming a horny margin on the wings. Flowers deep yellow to orange, in clusters above the spines (photo right shows young developing fruits). Fruit distinctly 3-lobed when mature, c. 8 × 20 mm, on a pedicel c. 8 mm long.
Notes: Superficially similar to Euphorbia cooperi but distinguished by the much larger segments and the strongly undulating wing margins.
Derivation of specific name:
Habitat: In mixed woodland, in seasonally flooded areas on deep alluvial soils.
Altitude range: (metres) Up to 500 m
Flowering time:May - Aug
Worldwide distribution: Coastal Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and possibly southern Malawi.
Zimbabwe distribution: E
Growth form(s): Tree, shrub over 2 m.
