UTM Coordinates: 557812.985, 8633679.801. 1500Zambia1227B3 W0Acacia tree ranging in height from 2-10 m. Bark powdery yellow, thin and easily scraped off to reveal green underneath with a red inner bark. Spines in pairs 2-3 cm in length on trunk and branches; straight spines and alternate arrangement on branches. Leaves bipinnate alternate compound. Flowers white puff ball ca. 2 cm in diameter on stem (3 cm) on upper branches. Flowering late June-July. Pods not visible. Collected 26 June 1996 along west wall of 7 acre enclosure, 30 m from river.-12.33333327.5000004

No spines. Leaves compound bipinnate in tufts of 3-4. Fruits/flowers not visible. Collected 20 July 1996 from termite mound within 14 acre chimp enclosure.-12.33333327.5000004

Flower small, yellow centre with small white petals. Fruit "blackjack", thin black seeds that cling. Collected 26 July 1996 from fields fence line next to 14 acre chimpanzee enclosure.-12.33333327.5000004

Bark rough grey with vertical fissures and patches of lichens growing on them. Fruit brown pod, woody, ca. 12 cm in length with beak. Leaf pinnate with 12-15 leaflets. Local name (Bemba) = "musamba". Local people strip bark, use inner fibers for rope. Collected 12 July 1996 within 14 acre enclosure; 20 July 1996 outside east fence of 14 acre chimp enclosure.-12.33333327.5000004

Trunk rough grey bark, vertical fissures and transverse cracks with lichens growing in patches on bark. Upper branches show some grey lichen patches but appear smoother, curvy. Pod green turning to brown and exploding when ripe, woody and beaked ca. 8-9 cm. Leaves alternate pinnate, compound with 3-4 pairs of leaflets; terminal pair is longest; new leaves appear red with red-yellow base. Collected 8 July 1996, 20 July 1996, 30 July 1996.-12.33333327.5000004

UTM Coordinates: 557812.985, 8633679.801. 1500Zambia1227B3 W0Common shrub 1-2 m in height primarily growing along fencelines, roads and in grassland. Trunk grey, rough flaking in pieces ca. 6 cm in diameter. Leaf elliptic opposite leaf with tapering apice and rounded, slightly lobed bark up to 18 cm in length by 9 cm in width, yellow-green to green with prominent yellow to red central vein. Fruit small (2 mm) berries, clustered with ca. 200+ berries per branch, yellow in color ripening to red. New leaves green with fuzzy brown underside arising in leaf axils. Local name (Bemba) "Kafifi". Roots mixed with bark of Brachystegia longifolia, boiled with H2O and used to treat bilharzia (Schistosomiasis). Cattle eating leaves causes photosensitization (due to liver damage). Collected 21 July 1996 along fenceline near 14 acre enclosure.-12.33333327.5000004

Leaves simple opposite, shiny green with midrib and veins yellow-green to brown, ca. 10 cm x 4 cm. Fruit green berries ca. 5 mm in diameter in clusters of 6-13 arising in leaf axils. Collected 2 August 1996 along road 0.25 km east of Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphange.-12.33333327.5000004

Branches with short (1-2 mm) spines in 3's. Leaves simple oval; deep medium green with yellow midrib and veins; simple alternate; range in size from 4-7 cm; apice tapering, some notched; base rounded. Fruit small (2 mm); bluish-grey berries (Sept.-Oct.). Local name (Bemba) = "mulenbalemba". Collected 1 August 1996 behind 14 acre chimp enclosure building.-12.33333327.5000004

UTM Coordinates: 557812.985, 8633679.801. 1500Zambia1227B3 W0Tree of medium height, ca. 5 m, with spreading crown and curving branches. Bark grey, very rough with vertical fissures. Fruit red/brown pods with many green to brown seeds inside; unripe pod is fuzzy, dried pod is not fuzzy; size ranges from 15-23 cm. Leaves green leathery with notched apice and base, ca. 10 cm in diameter; loses leaves in July-Aug. People eat dried pod. Leaves cooked in pot with water and smoke/steam is inhaled to get rid of coughs or demons. Collected 28 July 1996.-12.33333327.5000004
