Lax, spreading many branches from centre, often 4 ft long. Stem dull, brick-red, nodes whitish, midrib of leaf raised below, spikes pink.

Flowers pinkish; corolla pink, calyx dark green, white edged, stipules flesh-pink.

Erect, 3 ft herb, bracts and leaves below spike variegated with white at base, some bracts nearly white. Spikes lavender. Leaves tend to turn dark purple with age beginning at margin, old stems dark purple.

Submerged weeds in such masses at to stop the propeller of small motor boat.

Aquatic, leaves floating, flower spikes projecting above surface, leaves brown or green.

Cited in Flora Zambesiaca volume 8 part 3:102 (1988). Although this record is cited for the Western Division of Zimbabwe, the island now belongs to Zambia's Southern Division.
